Although it’s definitely not exhaustive, this list of the world’s 10 most controversial foods serves as a reminder that some of what we might consider daily staples are actually having serious environmental and social consequences. Whilst we may be familiar with the environmental costs of beef or the sustainability of cod populations, the list also highlights the multi-factored problems of items such as bagged salad, “It’s in plastic, it’s the most thrown-away food item, at this time of year it’s grown under LED lights in the Netherlands – it’s pointless,” says Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University of London, reminding us that there is a long list of ethical and environmental issues that we need to consider when we come to ‘judge’ the food we eat.
