Help customers choose sustainable dishes with Menu Carbon Labelling

Explore how our Carbon Labelling Programme brings transparency to the environmental impact of your customers’ food choices as well as your procurement practices.

At Future Green, we make sustainability easy. Together with our Menu Carbon Labelling Programme, we empower foodservice providers to offer customers a clear, transparent view of each menu item’s environmental impact, measured in carbon emissions.

As a result, diners are empowered to make informed, planet-friendly choices, while your business gains recognition as a pioneer in the sustainable dining movement. Ultimately, together, we’re creating a cleaner, greener future.

Struggling to Showcase Sustainability?

Are you a food service provider feeling the pressure to address sustainability but unsure where to start?

Are your consumers increasingly interested in eco-friendly choices, but you lack the resources to communicate the environmental impact of your offerings effectively?

Many businesses find it challenging to balance profitability with planet-friendly practices, especially when facing limited data on how to make practical, impactful changes.

Future Green’s Menu Carbon Labelling Programme provides foodservice businesses with a simple but powerful tool to clearly showcase the carbon impact of each menu item.

Furthermore, through our collaboration with Klimato, our trusted data partner as well as an expert in environmental impact analysis, we calculate the carbon footprints using Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)—which, in turn, cover every stage of food production, from farming to transportation and all the way to the plate.

As a result, our easy-to-read icons clearly indicate whether a menu item has a low, medium, or high climate impact. This, therefore, helps customers make informed decisions about their food choices. Additionally, these labels highlight your business’s commitment to a sustainable future, setting you apart as a leader in sustainability.

Here’s a video explainer on how to carbon label your menu.

FAQs

Q: How does carbon labelling work on my menu?
A: Basically, each menu item is assessed for its greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalents) using ISO-certified Life Cycle Assessments, accounting for the production, transportation, and preparation stages.

Q: How are the low, medium, and high climate-impact icons determined?
A: Icons are based on the carbon footprint of each dish in kilograms of CO2e. For example, low-impact meals have emissions of 0.5 kg CO2e or less, aligned with WWF’s One Planet Plate guidelines to support climate goals.

Q: What data do I need to provide?
A: We’ll need three main data points: ingredient provenance, dish weight, as well as the farming/growing methods used. These details help calculate an accurate carbon footprint for each menu item. Afterward, we will supply you with a simple Excel sheet to complete for each ingredient.

Q: Is there a way to trial this to test the market first?
A: Yes! Run a test at a one-off event and sense check if your attendees are curious about food’s carbon footprint before diving in.

Q: How will this data be presented on the menu?
A: We use simple, recognisable icons as well as precise carbon numbers (in kg CO2e) to convey impact levels, making it easy for customers to identify the environmental impact of their choices.

Q: Can I implement this with a seasonal or rotating menu?
A: Yes, our programme can easily adapt to changing menus. We’ll work with you to update carbon data as needed, ensuring consistency and accuracy across your offerings.

Q: What are the training options for my team?
A: We offer hands-on training sessions to introduce the programme to your staff, so they’re confident in explaining the carbon labelling to customers and promoting the benefits of sustainable choices.

Q: How is the carbon data verified?
A: Our partner is Klimato, whose data is backed by reputable research institutes such as the RISE Food Climate Database a the Swedish Environmental Institute, ensuring reliable and credible impact measurements.

Q: Can this help with our ESG reporting?
A: Absolutely. As a matter of fact, our programme will provide in-depth reporting tools that align with ESG standards, making it easier to track and report your progress on sustainability goals.

Q: What support is available after implementation?
A: We provide you with a comprehensive programme that ensures your work is worthwhile and your time is well spent.

In addition, we offer monthly “ask me anything” coaching calls (membership) so you always have technical support and can answer any of those pesky questions. We also have an online community space where your questions will be answered either by your peers or our team.
